To protect applicants’ personal data, we designed GreenCardHero as a software to be used on a single computer. However, we understand there are times you want to move things to another computer β for example: you bought a new laptop, or your spouse lives far away.
Don’t worry, we have you covered π
Pro Tip: If you simply want to print out your filled-out forms on a different computer, there is an easier way to do that. Check out our guide on that here.
Let’s begin
Moving GreenCardHero involves moving a file from the old computer to the new one. It’s a pretty easy process. We’ll walk through it step by step:
π‘ Just to help keep us clear on which computer we are referring to, I’m going call the original computer (where you first worked on your application) as “Computer A“. And I’ll call the new computer “Computer B“.
Step 1
Go to Computer A. In the top menu bar, select “File“, then “Export Data“:
This will export all the data you have already entered on Computer A into a file. Save this file (it is named GreenCardHero Data.gch) onto Computer A‘s Desktop.
Step 2
Next, move this file GreenCardHero Data.gch from Computer A to Computer B. There are many ways you can move the file: either through a flash drive, or through something like Google Drive or Dropbox.
Step 3
Finally, once the file GreenCardHero Data.gch is successfully moved onto Computer B. Install GreenCardHero on Computer B (download it from our website), but do not go through the registration process again. Instead, import that file in the new GreenCardHero on Computer B:
After this step, you should see that all your data and forms are now available on Computer B. You can pick up right where you left off on Computer A. If you have already paid, your payment history is retained. We are good to go! π
The GreenCardHero data on the two computers are not “synced”. So if you change something on Computer B, Computer A would not reflect that change. In order for Computer A to get that change, you will need to export from Computer B and import it back in Compute A.
Why can’t I just log in on the new computer?
You may wonder why you can’t just “log in” to your GreenCardHero account from the new computer. This is because we want to protect your personal data.
By design, GreenCardHero only stores your personal data on your own computer’s hard drive. So your data is never sent through the internet and hackers can’t steal it. πͺ
However, a trade-off that comes with the added data security is when you want to move to a new computer, that new computer doesn’t know your data so you have to transfer a file over.
We understand that this workflow is not as convenient as having an online log in, but we think it’s worth the extra effort in order to keep everyone’s data safe. π
